Job Description and Duties

The Permanent, Full Time Registered Nurse (Safety) will be directed by the Unit Supervisor, Lead Senior Psyhciatric Technician, RN Shift Lead or the Health Services Specialist depending on the shift/program assigned at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Helps to create a clean, safe and therapeutic environment for patients or inmates; apply mental health principles and relationship security with patients or inmates; supervise patient activities
• Performs nursing procedures such as administering medications including oral medications and hypodermic injection, observes and assesses patients or inmates physical condition and behavior and reports significant changes to the shift lead or physician and records nursing notes in the patients or inmate record
• Assesses and records patient acuity ratings; assesses and authorizes Restraint and Seclusion, determines Nursing Diagnosis and prepares Nursing Care Plans; prepares and cares for patients or inmates during treatment; gives first aid and CPR, and following infection control procedures
• Supervises patient activities, shakedown; i.e., searches for drugs, contraband, weapons and inspects facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a patient or inmate
• Observes and intervenes in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts
• Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting, applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital.

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at RN Correctional Facility EXAM BULLETIN , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of the legal requirements to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in California.

Working Conditions

12 hour shifts and other alternate schedules may be available based on current staffing needs.

Effective October 1, 2021, in accordance with California Department of Public Health (CDPH) State Public Health Order of August 5, 2021, all workforce members in DSH state hospitals are required to be fully vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccination regimen. Prior to your first day, you will be required to fill out a COVID-19 Vaccination Consent Form.

In accordance with the CDPH State Public Health Order of January 25, 2022, hospital workforce members currently eligible for booster doses must have received their booster dose following the below guidelines:

If you are fully vaccinated, you must provide verification of a booster dose for COVID-19 no later than March 1, 2022 or prior to your start date (whichever occurs first).
  • If you are not fully vaccinated, you have the option to receive a vaccine from one of the State Hospitals prior to your start date.
  • If you are not fully vaccinated and choose to complete a request for an exemption, you must submit this exemption and receive approval prior to your start date.
  • If you are not yet eligible for a booster, you must be in compliance no later than 15 days after the recommended timeframe for receiving the booster dose.
