Job Summary

Join the mission-driven team at the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) and promote and protect the health of all Minnesotans!

The Laboratory Scientist 2 will perform analytical data review and quality assurance activities for the Environmental Laboratory Section as needed, and ensure reviews are conducted consistently and in coordination with other data review and quality assurance personnel. Job responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing the data generated by the Environmental Section to ensure it meets all established quality assurance criteria and that data is reported in a timely manner.
  • Provide feedback to section analysts and management related to resolving issues that may affect the laboratory's ability to meet data quality objectives.
  • Work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

To facilitate proper years of service crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.

Bachelor's degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences.

Two (2) years of experience analyzing samples in one or more areas of environmental analysis and/or reviewing relevant analytical data.
  • Master's degree in chemical, biological, or physical sciences may substitute for 18 months or experience; Doctorate for two years.

Qualifications to be assessed at interview:
  • The ability to work independently, including planning, coordinating own work, and pay strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in or otherwise knowledgeable about performing environmental analyses and/or clinical samples utilizing a variety of instrumentation including single and triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and high-resolution mass spectrometry and/or other forms of chemical quantitative detection.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws or other requirements pertaining to environmental data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to review raw data such as mass spectrometer printouts, chromatograms, and other laboratory instrument and quality control data for completeness and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and preferred experience with Element LIMS. Knowledge and application of laboratory quality management systems and good laboratory practices (e.g., ISO17025).
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions and to use spreadsheets, formulas, and charts.
  • Experience following quality control procedures and protocol to ensure accuracy of tests using documented procedures.
  • The ability to assist in training others, to work in a team environment, and to provide input for various technical and quality system related activities.
  • Computer skill in operating instruments, data handling, and data presentation.
