Overview

  • This position is open until filled with an initial application review to take place after 5/15/2024.
  • The wage range for this position is $22.70 per hour and is non-negotiable.
  • This is a non-remote position and the incumbent must reside a commutable distance from San Diego State University.

SERG is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of the San Diego State University Research Foundation and is committed to restoring and preserving California’s sensitive vegetation communities for the benefit of the environment and the preservation of the ecosystem services they offer.

The Research Assistant will help implement habitat restoration projects. This position requires manual labor, working outdoors, heavy lifting and carrying, and working on rugged terrain. This is a full-time, hourly position with full benefits. Relocation benefits will not be offered.



Responsibilities

Responsibility 95%

  • Remove non-native species manually, mechanically, or chemically
  • Install erosion control material
  • Collect native plant propagules
  • Grow native plants
  • Install and maintain native species out-plantings
  • Monitor rare plant population
  • Survey vegetation communities

Other Duties and Responsibilities as assigned 5%



Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to repeatedly lift loads of up to 45 lbs throughout the workday and to safely navigate and work off-trail in steep, rocky, cactus-covered terrain.
  • Ability to communicate with other staff, contractors, and military commands clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers, other civilian contractors, and military personnel.
  • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.
  • Ability to relate well to others within the project environment.
  • Ability to display motivation and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Familiarity with native plant propagation, rare plant monitoring, and/or exotic plant control methods
  • Experience performing strenuous labor with a high level of physical endurance under a variety of weather and work conditions
  • Experience working in a remote field site
  • Valid driver’s license, and ability to drive 4-wheel-drive-vehicles

Minimum Required Experience/Education

  • Completion of sufficient lower division coursework or equivalent of one-year related experience in lieu of coursework.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid California Qualified Applicator Certificate strongly preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, and ability to drive 4-wheel-drive-vehicles strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with native plant propagation, rare plant monitoring, and/or exotic plant control methods strongly preferred.
  • Experience performing strenuous labor with a high level of physical endurance under a variety of weather and work conditions strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a remote field site.
